Carbon footprint : students perfect a “Made in Icam” tool
As part of their MSI, three students are working on improving the data collection and transformation tool used to produce carbon footprints. This project is part of Icam’s SD&RS master plan, one of whose objectives is to reduce the company’s carbon footprint.

12,000 tonnes of CO2 : that’s the carbon footprint of all Icam France sites in 2023. “That’s the equivalent of 2,757 round-the-world trips in a combustion-powered car, say Paul, Alexis and Adnan, 5th-year students at Icam’s Nantes site. The aim is to reduce our impact, and to achieve this, it’s crucial to understand and measure our emissions precisely. That’s where we come in”. Their mission, as part of their MSI, is to optimize the current tool used to collect and transform data.
This tool covers all Icam sites in France, all graduating classes and the different student pathways (Bachelor, Integrated, Apprenticeship, Professional Training, etc.). It takes into account all sectors of activity that emit CO2: student and employee travel, general services, machine purchases, Icam residences, etc.
“Given the diversity of the parameters, this tool still needs to be developed to guarantee its effectiveness. This involves improving data collection and verification. In particular, we’re going to modify the questions to obtain more precise declarations, and set up control algorithms to spot errors”, explain the students, accompanied by project manager Mathilde Fève.
By the end of January, Paul, Alexis and Adnan will have finalized a “Made in Icam” tool that is more efficient and optimized for a better user experience. This tool will make the annual carbon assessments more reliable, and identify the corrective actions to be taken to progressively reduce Icam’s greenhouse gas emissions, in line with the “Sustainable Development and Social Responsibility” (SD&SR) plan. The students also aim to develop a project to track students’ carbon emissions during their time at Icam.
