French as a Foreign Language

Overview

Program at a glance

Each year we have the pleasure of welcoming students from the four corners of the world to join us at Icam. They come from different backgrounds but share a common desire to study at Icam, and immerse and integrate into French life.

Going beyond a simple language class, Icam’s French as a Foreign Language ensures complete immersion into the French culture by teaching language and grammar concepts while actively learning about French history, geography, and traditions.

Students are grouped according to their proficiency in french and the number of students are kept at a minimum. Students quickly feel comfortable at Icam thanks to the support and attention of their class and teachers ; they quickly appreciate “a friendly and warm work atmosphere” – something they do not always come across in their home university where there are sometimes thousands of students on the same campus.

Linguistic progress is sometimes enormous and they leave full of memories, of successfully completed projects and a stock of new vocabulary!

Program Structure

Icam’s French as a Foreign Language is based on an active pedagogy from A2 to C2.

Grammar and vocabulary is studied through a variety of educational teaching aids and specific topics are discussed which deal with cultural and social issues. Role plays, project activities, written productions, study of written and audio documents, are some of the different activities offered to students to learn grammar through a deductive approach.

Participants’ levels in French are wide-ranging (from beginners to real experts in the language of Molière). The students are divided into groups with different levels of competence in languages and with different objectives.

Below are sample pedagogical projects based on the level of proficiency:

  • For Beginner Level: Writing a personal diary book illustrating knowledge of the French language while providing  insight into one’s daily life in France
  • For Intermediate Level: Creation and development of a game where one meets people, asks questions, and finds answers in a collaborative way
  • Preparation of an intercultural party
