Icam Nantes has been working for several years to the energy recovery of residues by thermal processes (pyrolysis for example). If these types of processes are often used to provide alternative fuel, they are also able to transform biomass to solid product as carbonization, thus carbon fiber in this study.
This work is supervised by IRT Jules Verne of Nantes. The aim is to finish the design, to build the pre-designed bench, test and validate it. The lab bench is a small scale of an existing continuous furnace (fig 1) in operating condition at high temperature under inert condition. The bench can convert biomass into carbon fiber.
First, the job is to build the lab-bench in Icam and complete the design.
In a second step, the bench must be validated and carbon fiber produced. All the process as to be fine tune in order to improve the production but with de reduction of operating costs and co-product generation (tars).
Finally, because pyrolysis provide coproduce always tars, designed solution must be added and tested.
