France needs more engineers. Icam makes meaningful choices. Instead of expanding the Icam site in Lille, preference was given to the creation of other sites on French territory. First in Nantes (1977), then in Toulouse (1978). Later near Paris-Sénart (2012).
Pioneer in France, Icam seizes the opportunity to train engineers in a strong partnership with companies. Engineering students are part time employed during 3 years and assume missions of growing complexity. Company managers are committed stakeholders to propose the engineering student challenging situations where he can get the required learning outcomes. Today 280 engineers are promoted by year. This Co-op program was implemented on two new sites La Roche sur Yon (1994) and Vannes (2001).
Indicative of a coming trend where engineers need be trained “in their country and for their country” while maintaining a global outlook, the Central Africa Catholic University tapped Icam during the development of an engineering program. Armed with a mission to form African engineers for Africa’s local development, the initiative led to the creation of a site in Pointe Noire (Congo Brazzaville) and a site in Douala (Cameroon). The best suiting program is the three year blended-co-op program after a two year first cycle in Pointe Noire.
Initially independent, the 5 first Icam sites in France were grouped together under the same Icam Group entity. This has strongly stimulated the common strategy and the dynamics of cooperation. The Icam diploma became national. This operation paved the way for the international development phase.
Creation of Loyola Icam College of Technology in Chennai – India.
An alliance between the Loyola College in Chennai and Icam led to the creation of new engineering programs addressing the need for engineers able to accompany the strong industrial and economic growth in India. Bachelor programs in Engineering and Technology cover the following domains: Computer science, Electronics and Communication, Electrical and Electronics, Information technology, Mechanics.
The Loyola Icam College of Engeenering and Technology opens in Chennai, Madurai province, and is experiencing a meteoric evolution from year to year. In 2013, the first Indian students were welcomed in France as part of the “French-Indian program”, which opened them from 2014 to a double degree.
The sixth French campus, Icam Paris-Sénart campus, is being created in a very favourable local context. The campus buildings were inaugurated on October 2, 2015 and the first engineers graduated by apprenticeship in October 2016 and then in 2017 for the “parcours intégré”.
Audacious step forward in the pedagogical innovation, this “Parcours ouvert” is built on four founding principles:
- Larger scale of students profiles
- International inter-sites synchronized program
- Project and Problem based learning as the royal path to creativity and innovation
- Addressing of the real world problems in the vision of Integral ecology
This program with students distributed in Douala, Recife, France … and in the near future in other places in the world is an extraordinary promising opportunity for new generations of international multi-disciplinary engineers.
Icam is building a brand new campus in downtown Pointe-Noire, Congo, equipped with the digital technologies needed for learning and backed by a student residence. Similar constructions were also carried out in Chennai (2010) and Douala (2013). In Central Africa, training had previously started in premises lent by a business partner (Total), pending the construction of the buildings. In India, the speed of campus implementation allowed students to start immediately in the final premises.
This new entity offers students innovative courses, combining local skills (in the fields of civil engineering and architecture, in particular) and Icam’s strong experience in innovative and creative teaching methods, open to the world, and training that is very close to the needs of companies. More than 2,000 Brazilian students are currently enrolled in the Unicap-Icam International School.
The start of 2019 will see the emergence of two new Icamentities, in Recife (Brazil) and Kinshasa (DRC). Successful partnerships with local universities allow the creation of these schools, also in line with recruitment opportunities offered by local companies.
The Université Loyola Congo ULC-Icam Faculty of Engineering is training industrial maintenance graduates (LMD) and generalist, multi-skilled and multicultural engineers at the Kimwenza campus in the D.R.Congo.
A generalist training for technically competent and humanly responsible men and women, at the service of companies and humanity.
This gave momentum to the creation of doctorate programs and Research activities on Icam sites in Lille, Nantes, Toulouse and Paris in synergy with partner laboratories in France and abroad.
