OpenWaste Hackathon: concrete projects for recycling construction waste

Grand Paris Sud
23 Oct 2024

On October 17 and 18, 2024, Icam hosted the OpenWaste Hackathon at its Grand Paris Sud site. The aim for the students taking part was to take up the challenge of innovative waste management in the construction and public works sector.

For two days, 120 students from various establishments (Icam, UPEC, ESITC, IUT de Sénart, Lycée François Mansart) took part in the OpenWaste Hackathon at the Icam Grand Paris Sud site. Their challenge: to design innovative solutions for the recovery of construction waste, the management of which is a major issue in this sector.

Divided into 15 mixed teams of 8 students and coached by mentors and experts throughout the event, they had 48 hours to collaborate and propose concrete projects.

At the end of two days of intense work, the various groups pitched their projects to a grand jury of experts, who selected the following four projects:

1st prize : Team 14, Terrateinte project (Charlotte Ngando’s team, A4)
Creation of a natural, eco-responsible paint using crushed terracotta waste from which pigments are extracted.

2nd prize : team 9, LEt’sGo concrete project (Arthus Motte team, B3)
Project to reuse crushed concrete to create durable, movable and customizable concrete blocks and street furniture.

3rd prize : Team 1 with the Greensoil project (Ismail Asib team, B2)
Local support for the treatment of excavated soil.

“Coup de coeur” prize : Team 10, Tera Cotta project (Ethan Rohee’s team, B2)
Creation of mortar from terracotta waste for renovation of historic monuments.

The event was organized by Matériaupôle, in partnership with Icam, UPEC, the Campus des Métiers et des Qualifications d’Excellence, and Grand Paris Aménagement.

Congratulations to all our students who took part !
