The traditional electricity grid is based on centralized production from conventional power plants. The increase in availability of distributed energy resources (DERs) on distribution feeders has led to a remarkable and interesting transition. In this context, microgrid is an attractive solution for integrating distributed renewable sources into the utility grid through a point-of-common coupling (PCC) or it can choose to “island” to remain online if weather or grid faults occur. Such a system combines renewable generations with conventional distributed generations, storage systems, and loads. However, it also associates with a high level of uncertainty and volatility following climatic conditions. Thus, implementing a supervisory microgrid controller, renewable DERs and energy storage resources can be integrated into the grid effectively.
The project will focus on applying optimization approches to minimize the operation cost in small scale MGs. Simulink and Simscape power systems are used to model, test and understand the supervisory Microgrid controllers.
