ACC

The Douvrin/Billy-Berclau battery manufacturing plant project is being led by the ACC (Automotive Cells Company) joint venture.
Created in the summer of 2020 by Saft, PSA and Opel, this joint venture embodies their desire to combine their expertise to create a leading global player in the development and manufacture of batteries for the automotive industry at the highest level of performance from 2023.
This Franco-German alliance is also driven by the goal of regaining European industrial sovereignty in the field of electric mobility and thus contributing to achieving the energy transition and low-carbon mobility objectives.
Saft brings its expertise in battery research and development and industrialization, and the PSA Group brings its knowledge of the automotive market and experience in mass production.
The ACC company’s project in Billy-Berclau involves building a factory for the production of battery cells and modules for electric vehicles. The site is planned next to the PSA site in Douvrin, straddling the towns of Douvrin and Billy-Berclau, in Pas-de-Calais, within the Artois Flandres Industrial Park.
The ACC project is divided into three main phases:
- the deployment of research & development with the construction of an R&D center in Bruges near Bordeaux (33) and a pilot plant in Nersac, near Angoulême (16);
- the construction of the battery production plant in Douvrin / Billy-Berclau, with a first block with a capacity of at least 8 GWh in 2023, then between 2023 and 2028 the progressive construction of the other blocks.
- the construction of a second battery production plant in Germany in Kaiserslautern and in Italy in Termoli in 2025.
