Congratulations to Lucas Marquez who just defended his thesis at the University of Liège last Friday (April 12). His work was co-supervised by Hervé Le Sourne, research manager at Icam, alongside Philippe Rigo, a professor at the University of Liège. Part of the research, especially the characterization tests on reinforced concrete beams under impact, was conducted at Icam, Nantes campus and at Centrale Nantes (GeM/CRED).

Thesis Title: Analytical and numerical modeling of ship collisions against floating offshore wind turbines with concrete floaters. The increasing demand for renewable energy leads to the installation of floating wind turbines further away from the coast. While steel has been the predominant material used in the construction of floating wind turbines, reinforced concrete (RC) and prestressed concrete (PC) are gaining increasing interest due to their economic and environmental benefits. In order to better understand the structural vulnerability of reinforced and prestressed concrete floaters to accidental events, this research explores various modeling techniques for wind turbines on concrete floaters subjected to ship collisions. The focus is particularly on the development of computationally inexpensive models that can provide valuable information on the impact vulnerability of these structures and thus contribute to the development of reliable and robust design standards.
