Cifre Project – Bio-based polyurethane foams without MDI based on modified lignins

This PhD project aims to design bio-based and recyclable non-isocyanate polyurethane (NIPU) foams by valorizing lignin. Through chemical modifications, this renewable resource will be transformed into polyhydroxyurethane (PHU) and then formulated to produce a foam that meets the highest industrial standards. These innovative materials are intended to be integrated into the automotive trims of our partner Howa Tramico. To guarantee a "zero-defect" product, their performance will be rigorously characterized and evaluated in situ using cutting-edge digital twin technology. By eliminating the petroleum derivatives and hazardous chemicals traditionally used in the manufacturing process, this research represents a major technological breakthrough: it will significantly reduce the carbon footprint while improving health, safety, and environmental impacts.
