Pedagogy at Icam

Icam’s educational approach is first and foremost one of choice and success.

This philosophy begins from the very recruitment process, with a “choose and be chosen” approach that makes it truly unique.

Students, for their part, must desire Icam and commit to learning their engineering craft .

Icam, for its part, carefully considers each student’s project and organizes their admissions process based on application review and interviews. Thus, the student and Icam mutually choose each other to achieve success together. At Icam, the goal is to graduate 100% of its admitted students.

Icam’s teaching approach is also a hands-on approach . Following the Arts & Métiers tradition, the training programs rely heavily on practical work and projects. Icam engineers need to see, touch, and experience the theories they learn. For several years now, the creation of Fablabs on each campus has allowed students in the digital age to quickly and easily apply their knowledge to real-world applications. The Industrial Scientific Project, for its part, is a concrete project for a company.

Experiential learning reinforces practical application. Close ties with the business world are strengthened through numerous internships. In parallel, various outreach missions, experienced as genuine human adventures, are organized. Social missions invite learners to serve others at the local level. These experiential learning opportunities allow them to engage with more distant realities and/or other cultures, fostering maturity and self-awareness. Integral ecology missions help them discover and reflect on the social and environmental challenges facing the world.

At Icam, the approach of teachers and staff is distinctive, fostering a collaborative learning environment . Teachers and staff trust students and consistently challenge them to embrace their freedom and responsibility. Alongside this approach, facilitated and guided reflection sessions, both individual and group-based, allow students to learn from their experiences. They are then encouraged to make conscious choices and take steps to improve themselves.

Ultimately, Icam’s pedagogy focuses on the student in all their dimensions; it is truly a holistic approach . Beyond the “how to,” which corresponds to the engineer’s skills and the practical aspect of “how,” there is also a “way of being,” which encompasses meaning, ethics, the “why,” and the “what for.” All of this is summarized in Icam’s motto: “The art and manner of making the world.”
